Why Join?

In America during the mid 1800s pioneers traveled west on the National Road by wagon. Typically these were Conestoga wagons and they traveled west in a single file line known as a wagon train.

At night the wagons would form a circle around their encampment and livestock for defensive reasons. We employ the idiom "Circle the wagons!" today to unite people in a common purpose—in this case, in support of the National Interpretive Center of Vandalia, Illinois!

The Conestoga Circle connects history enthusiasts, preservationists, and travelers who share a passion for America’s first great highway and offers them opportunities to be a part of something meaningful that honors the past, shapes the future, and keeps the spirit of the National Road alive.
